Children are always welcome in worship. Children’s Worship Bulletins are available from the ushers. Help your child find the pages in the hymnals or Bible for the hymns and scripture readings. Worship Bags are also available with activities for your child to do during the sermon. Children are welcome to take the stickers in the Ziploc bag home with them. After the service please put everything back into the Worship Bag and leave it in the pew. The ushers will gather them after the service. If your child needs to leave the service, do so but please accompany them… and please come back!

Our Safe Sanctuaries Procedure during Worship Services...
In order to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our children and youth, we ask that no children leave the sanctuary during worship unattended without an adult. We must take care to make sure that everyone, even the littlest ones, finds our church to be a safe sanctuary where they can experience God's love. If you have any questions or concerns about this procedure please talk to Elizabeth Bowes, Minister of Christian Education.

May Special Offerings support Tree of Life Ministry
Special Offerings received in May will be given to support Tree of Life Ministry, a ministry with Native Americans to address need on the Rosebud and Crow Creek reservations. The people who live here have been a depressed people for well over 100 years. Decisions by a dominant society have left this culture in despair and alcohol driven. Todd County, which is the Rosebud Reservation, is the fourth poorest county in the nation. Alcoholism and drug use is around 80%, diabetes, unemployment is 87%, and the suicide rate is highest in the nation.
The main purpose of the ministry is to be an extension of God’s hands by letting the people know that they care and they are here to help them better their lives; spiritually, economically and physically. They continually work on homes, buildings, (i.e., shelters, daycares, youth centers, senior centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers, community centers, etc. There is a
clothing room, and they also work with many agencies in direct service to the people in need.
To give to this special offering, write your check to “Wesley United Methodist Church” designate it by writing “Tree of Life Ministry” on your check and on the offering envelope.

“An Evening with Marsha Stevens”
Saturday, May 10 @ 7:30 pm
Wesley United Methodist Church, Naperville
ALSO APPEARING: Friday, May 9, @ 7:30 pm
Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 South Garfield Ave, Hinsdale, IL 60521
Maybe you know Marsha Stevens because she wrote a song you love, or because she came to your church to do a concert. Stevens became the first (and as of 2002, the only) major singer in the contemporary Christian music subculture to identify herself publicly as a lesbian. But since September of 2002, Christians have been re-introduced to Marsha by “The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music,” sold in Bible bookstores across the country. Here is an excerpt of what they had to say about her: “If Larry Norman is to be called the father of Christian Rock, then Marsha Stevens certainly deserves to be known as the mother of contemporary
Christian music,
a title that Christian Century and others have bestowed upon her. She was the leader of what is considered to be the world’s first contemporary Christian music group, Children of the Day, and she has continued as a solo artist to produce albums of worship-oriented and edifying adult contemporary pop. As such, she remains the progenitor of what, by 2002, would become the single most popular genre in the contemporary Christian music market.”
(Excerpt from “The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music,” Sept. 2007)
No tickets are needed. A free will offering will be taken.

12 Baskets: Donate to Wesley Without Giving Money
If you have items of value that you no longer need, then we have a new program that can turn these items into cash for Wesley. Items such as jewelry, antiques, collectibles of many kinds, power tools, musical instruments, and sports memorabilia are just a few examples of items that are good candidates for this program. Typical rummage sale items are not appropriate.
We have entered into an agreement with an organization called Project 12 Baskets. They have considerable expertise in selling valuable items, primarily on the internet, and they will handle all details of the sale. They work primarily with churches and schools. For their efforts they get 30% of the sale price, and Wesley receives 70%. They will also provide all the information needed for you to receive a tax deduction for the full value of your donation.
It is easy to donate items for this activity. There is a leaflet with more information in the
kiosk in the Atrium or you can get copies of the leaflet from Debbie in the Church office. And on the back side of the leaflet is the simple form you fill out when making donations. If your donations are small, you can drop them off yourself at the Project 12 Baskets Collection Center here in Naperville. If the items are large you can contact the Collection Center and make arrangements for them to view the items, and they will also handle transportation. But for all the details including a more complete list of good donation items, the Collection Center location, its phone number, hours and the individual in charge, see the leaflet. Members of the Finance Committee can also answer your questions.
We urge all of you to give serious consideration to this program. Most of us have too much stuff. This is an opportunity to get rid of things we no longer need, and provide much needed funds for Wesley in this very tight budget year. If you are downsizing, or somehow involved in an estate sale, this is a particularly good time to consider donating items for this activity.

Reconciling Journey's Film Night
“Before Stonewall” on Saturday, May 31
Doors open at 6 pm, Film at 7 pm
Discussion following movie
http://www.afterstonewall.com/press_bs.html
Life was very different before the 1969 Stonewall riots put the issue of gay rights front and center in America. Using archival films and interviews with gays and lesbians who were forced to hide their sexuality for fear of reprisals, this documentary by Robert Rosenberg, Greta Schiller and John Scagliotti sheds light on American gay life from the 1920s to the 1960s and the sociopolitical climate that finally led to profound change.
Reconciling Journey ( http://www.glbtchristian.org/)is an affirming study and monthly fellowship for GLBTQ Christians and allies (straight supporters); those seeking to explore a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
For more information contact Karen Leimberer or Stacy DeVold-McCaskill.
Feel free to invite your friends. We hope to see you there!
